Christmas Youth Retreat

Youth 2000 Ireland will be holding their annual Christmas youth retreat in Newbridge College, Co. Kildare from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th December 2011. Over 500 young people aged 16-35 are expected to attend this donation only event, with all newcomers welcome. The weekend consists of an action packed programme including prayer, workshops, drama, inspirational talks, testimonies, music, games and chill out time. It's a great opportunity to learn more about your Catholic faith and to meet other young people. Volunteers urgently needed for the 50^th International Eucharistic Congress 2012The 50th International Eucharistic Congress 2012 (IEC2012) will take place in Dublin from 10th to 17^th June 2012.

Volunteers will have an integral role to play in the success of the Congress. Between two and three thousand volunteers will be needed during the week of the Congress and also to assist in preparations in the months leading up to the Congress. The Congress is now recruiting volunteers for a wide range of roles such as administration, data entry, stewards, marketing, transport, meet & greet, multimedia, pastoral preparation and much more! We need 10 people per parish from the Dublin diocese.

Walk of Light: You are invited to take part in the annual inter-church Walk of Light, on Sunday 20th November, beginning at 4pm in St. Ann’s Church of Ireland Church, Dawson Street, proceeding from there to St. Teresa’s Church, Clarendon St., and concluding atCentenary Methodist Church, Leeson Park with prayer and refreshments. A short service of prayer will take place in each of the three churches along the route. The Walk of Light is organised each year on the Feast of Christ the King by a number of churches in the south city and Leeson St area.

Irish Cancer Society Ecumenical Service: The annual ecumenical service organised by the Irish Cancer Society will take place at St. Mary’s

Pro-Cathedral on Sunday 13th November at 3.30 p.m. The liturgy has been prepared by Chaplaincy Students of Mater Dei Institute of Education.

Word on the Web: The next series of three Word on Web sessions in preparation for the International Eucharistic Congress starts on November 30th.

of the three sessions are Nov 30: What do we Remember? Dec 7: Why do we Give Thanks? Dec 14: Who is the Body of Christ?

I'm sure some parishioners are curious about what the rather grandly titled Parish Pastoral Councillors actually do at their meetings. If I wasn't on the Council, I would be wondering the same thing myself. So I thought I'd report here from now on on our monthly meetings to give people an idea of the kind of matters we discuss. This won't be a transcript of the minutes, but rather a summary of the main topics.

The idea for a website of some kind was first proposed by Fr Michael (Shortall) at a meeting in mid-2009. He said he could only help out when he could, owing to pressure of work. Donal McMahon then volunteered to help out and, with the technical help of former Rathcoole resident, Ruairi O hAilin, got this blog going in early 2010. This is an example of a PPC initiative from proposal to implementation, with the result that you see here -- far from perfect though it be.

Another, more recent, success story has been the work devoted to maintaining the parish grave-yard. It was a group of ordinary parishioners (and not primarily the PPC) who got this going. Thanks to their efforts the graveyard looked lovely for this summer's Cemetery Sunday Mass on the 3rd July.

Committee/Council work, as we all know, is often slow and tedious. There may be a long wait between the proposal and the carrying out of it. Many people in this parish do voluntary work for the Community Council, the various charity and sporting organisations etc., and well done to them all. The PCC is another such grouping where clergy and laity work together to further (how can I put this plainly and simply?) our common pursuit of a divinely promised goal ('the coming of the kingdom', 'the building up of the Body of Christ' etc, in more religious language). I suppose it all comes down in the end to simply doing something for people, being of service. And that's what we're here for, after all, isn't it?

So much, then, by way of announcing the account to be given here from now on of the main topics of the monthly Pastoral Council meeting.

Cursillo Retreat for Young Men: Cursillo is a movement within the Church that helps people to encounter God and to follow Him by deepening their faith and commitment to the Gospel. Bishop Eamonn Walsh and Fr. Martin Hughes, school chaplain in St. Mark’s Tallaght are looking for young men aged between 25-40 to consider a Cursillo retreat. The first retreat will take place in Los Angeles from 19th to 22nd January and will involve a group of approximately 10 men from Dublin leaving on the 14th January and returning 24th and who then will help run the later retreat in Dublin. The 'ambition' question at the end of the personalplayer profiles on the the 'dubhub' section of the 'Hill 16' website throw upanswers you would expect to see from a group of footballers in their 20s stillstriving to reach the top of their craft as a team.

Without exception, every player canvassed placed anAll-Ireland title with their county as thestand-out goal; many more includedsuccess with their club as an equalpriority. Few, if any, ventured outside the parameters with anything else.

Ger Brennan did, however. After success with StVincent's and Dublin, Brennan's 'ambition' in life is to "deepen myrelationship with God."

It is not uncommon for such strong spirituality andsport to mix, even in an Irish context. Ireland rugby player Andrew Trimble studied theology at Belfast Bible school and considers himself a devoutChristian.

Former England wing Jason Robinson also took a spiritual pathin his life after coming into closer contact with the former Samoan and NewZealand powerhouse Va'aiga Tuigamala.

For Brennan his desire to deepen his relationshipwith God has also manifested in a theology degree from St. Patrick's College Maynooth and his immersion in thepreparations for next year's 50th Eucharistic Congress.

The Congress, staged every four years across theworld, is back in Ireland for the first time in 80 years and after six days ofcelebration and information at the RDS it will culminate inCroke Park with an expected 80,000congregation.

Dublin centre-back Brennan has been a key componentof the preparations, acting as a pastoral assistant for the Congress' ministryto youth until recently, a task that involves delivering talks in variousDioceses across the country. Those who have heard the testimony of his faithhave been impressed by his powers of communication on the subject.

On the weekend of October 14-16, he will share aplatform with Tyrone manager Mickey Harte as part of the Diocese of Meath'sEucharistic Congress preparations, outlining to young people the role that Godplays in his life.

Tuigamala brought a huge physical edge to his game-- the image of him smashing his way through opponents with such force wassomewhat at odds with a softer spiritual side. And there is something of thatcontrast with Dublin's defensive enforcer too who, by his own admission, hashad to overcome a discipline issue on the field to mature into the player thathe is.

He takes his sport seriously. He takes his faithvery seriously too. And both are leading him to 80,000-plus congregations ofthe faithful in Croke Park.

Father Ciarán O’Carroll, former Parish Priest of Saggart, Rathcoole and Brittas has been appointed as Rector of the Pontifical Irish College in Rome.

We wish him every good blessing on his future ministry.

Father O’Carroll is the Episcopal Vicar for Evangelisation in the Archdiocese of Dublin and Administrator of the Catholic University Church on Saint Stephen’s Green, Dublin.

Father O’Carroll succeeds Monsignor Liam Bergin from the Diocese of Ossory, who has been Rector of the Irish College since 2001. For more information, please click here.

Introducing the New Missal

A new edition of the Roman Missal is being introduced this year. But what is the Roman Missal?

The term “Missal” refers to the book that contains all the prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass. The scripture readings used at Mass are also part of the Missal but are published separately in the “Lectionary.” The Missal is first written in Latin and this Latin text is then translated into the particular language of the people. In this way, while the Mass may be celebrated in many languages across the Roman Catholic world, it is the same core Latin text that is being prayed by the Church. In Ireland we have been using our current Missal since St. Patrick’s Day 1975. A new edition, the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, is coming into use in Ireland and in other English speaking countries in Autumn 2011. -prepared by the National Centre for Liturgy

Why are we getting a new edition of the Roman Missal?

The new edition of the Missal will come into full use over a period of time between September and the First Sunday of Advent 2011. The new edition is necessary for a number of reasons. Firstly, in the years since 1975 when our current Missal was published, a number of additional texts have been made available for use in the Mass. These include additional Eucharistic Prayers, some new Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Masses for over 20 new Feasts of Saints (for example St Pius of Pietrelcina – Padre Pio, Edith Stein, Maximillian Kolbe). These and other new material now need to go into the Missal so that they can be used in our celebrations.

Secondly, in recent years Rome gave new directions for the translation of the Latin texts. Translators were asked to make the English text follow more closely the original Latin in its wording and structure. They were also asked to strengthen the Biblical language and images in the texts and to re-introduce some theological vocabulary that may have been lost over years.Across the English speaking world the new edition of the Roman Missal will, therefore, contain both new material and a new style of translation. -prepared by the National Centre for Liturgy

Is the Mass changing?

The structure of the Mass is not changing. Its order and the actions of the Mass remain unchanged. The readings at Mass are not changed. However, with the introduction of the new edition of Roman Missal we will notice a change in how the Mass sounds. The translations of a significant number of our prayer texts from the original Latin have changed – sometimes by just a change in a particular word or in the word order. Prayers that we have become used to reciting by memory will need to be relearned. Prayers that we are used to hearing the priest say will sound different to us. The style of language we will hear and pray may seem more formal to us and perhaps, in parts, more complex. But over time, with the praying of these texts, the sound of the Mass will again become familiar to us. -prepared by the National Centre for Liturgy

Remembrance Service Notice: The National Maternity Hospital is holding its Annual Remembrance Service on Sunday 2nd October 2011 at 3pm in

Triduum to Saint Therese at Aughrim Street: Triduum to Saint Therese will take place in the Church of the Holy Family, Aughrim Street, on

Thursday/Friday 29th, 30th September at 10am and 7.30pm Masses, Saturday the 1st October at the 10am and 7pm (vigil) Masses. Each evening

Dear friends, may no adversity paralyze you. Be afraid neither of the world, nor of the future, nor of your weakness. The Lord has allowed you to live in this moment of history so that, by your faith, his name will continue to resound throughout the world.

Dear young people, if you wish to discover and to live faithfully the form of life to which the Lord is calling each of you, you must remain in his love as his friends. And how do we preserve friendship except through frequent contact, conversation, being together in good times and bad? Saint Teresa of Jesus used to say that prayer is just such “friendly contact, often spending time alone with the one who we know loves us” (cf. Autobiography, 8).

And so I now ask you to “abide” in the adoration of Christ, truly present in the Eucharist. I ask you to enter into conversation with him, to bring before him your questions and to listen to his voice. Dear friends, I pray for you with all my heart. And I ask you to pray for me. Tonight let us ask the Lord to grant that, attracted by the beauty of his love, we may always live faithfully as his disciples. Amen.

Summer Outings 2011

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

It doesn't seem like a year since our competition to do with the Irish High Crosses exhibition in the National Museum, Collins Barracks. I recommended people to visit it and offered a small prize to those who could tell me which cross had the two cats on it. Well, the answer was Muiredach's Cross, Monasterboice, and, since there were no entries, I didn't have to award the prize (out of my own pocket, be it said immediately, not out of parish funds). This exhibition ended round May.

So where will you and I go this summer? Glendalough is always an option, though it's going to be crowded from now on. It's a wonderfully inspiring place. I used often go there with a hill-walking group, but we'd walk straight (indeed, drive straight) past the ruins on our way towards the car-park and the start of the hike. Our goal was climbing hills, not visiting the monastic site. It's only years later that I had the idea of going there for its own sake and leaving the boots at home.

But no matter where we go this summer, I'm sure we'll find some interesting historic site to visit. Such places, as I've said before, can remind us of people who lived long ago and can set us thinking of the course of history and of ourselves here in the present for a short time and (we try to believe) for some purpose. Even visiting graveyards can cause us to think like this and, for me, such thinking is a kind of prayer.

Talking of graveyards, we had our Cemetery Sunday Mass on a glorious sunny day, 3rd July. The church was packed for Mass, with the blessing of the graves afterwards. The cemetery looked its best, thanks to the work of a volunteer group who had cleaned it up over the course of the previous few weeks. (No use relying on the Council.) I dropped in one evening to see them all well organised and hardly needing my brush and shovel. Many of them, I learned, had parents and grandparents buried there. That makes all the difference, doesn't it, this kind of rootedness in a place. The only people I know in the cemetery are people I came to know at some stage over the course of the 15 or so years I've been living here.

I live in the new part of the parish on the east side, near Citywest shopping centre. I sent an email to the SERA group (Saggart East Residents Association) to let them know about the Mass, and talking a bit about rootedness being more difficult for new residents in Saggart etc. I also let them know about this website, and how welcome they were to help with it or contribute to it. So if anyone from my neck of the woods is reading this, welcome to the site.

As, indeed, you all are, welcome here and welcome to contribute. There's a Suggestion Box if anyone wants to say something (constructive). There was one suggestion a while back (the only one so far) asking about 'Christian Meditation'. I answered it (look it up by clicking on 'Suggestion Box on the left) but haven't heard anything back. If anyone has a suggestion, please feel free to offer it for consideration.

Fr Michael keeps this site going with his Newsletter and other contributions. (By the way, does anyone know how to put a newsletter in PDF format to be opened by clicking? If you do, please let us know.) And I contribute my bit too, not very often, I have to admit. At times it's hard to believe that anyone is reading this. But, you'd never know, I suppose, maybe even someone from outside the parish.

The Catholic Herald (13 May 2011) had a report on the first meeting in Rome on the subject of blogs, organized by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. What Fr Roderick Vonhogen, a Dutch priest and author of the Katholiek Leven blog, had to say about his blogging experience made me smile: 'If you write a blog post and no one comments, you feel miserable. The comments let the writer and readers experience being part of a community.'

You needn't worry, I don't feel miserable -- well certainly not for reasons like that!

Thousands expected at major All Ireland Church celebration ahead of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in Ireland in 2012

All roads lead to Knock this weekend for the National Eucharistic Congress at Knock Shrine. The Catholic Church in Ireland is marking the one-year count down to next year’s International Congress by hosting a National Eucharistic Congress in Knock on 25 June next. Thousands of people from parishes all over the country will travel to Knock to take part in special events, workshops, celebrations and prayer. The Knock Youth Festival is also running at the same time as the National Eucharistic Congress.

The celebration in Knock is a chance to focus on the local community and the pastoral preparation in Ireland for the International Eucharistic Congress next year. The International Congress is not just a once-off week of events in 2012, but a journey of renewal. This is an opportunity to remind ourselves that we are part of something bigger than ourselves and to do something together – in communion – as one body.

Charity Walk Rathcoole Park Sat. June 25th
The Charity Walk, in aid of the Irish Cancer Society, will take place in Rathcoole Park on Saturday 25th June. This year we are looking to set a new Guinness World Record and need 6,000 Walkers. Tickets are available on the day and locally from Paddy Byrnes Newsagent, Adults €10 and all children U12 are free. There will be the Artane Senior Band, Tiny Tots Playground, Water Zorbs, a Craft Fair and a Farmers Market.This year we are also hosting a Mini Olympics in association with Donore Harriers for Boys & Girls U8 to U18 in Rathcoole Park on Friday 24th June starting from 630pm. All races are free and for Mom and Dad there is a 5km Charity Run at 8pm, registration on the night and is €5 per adult with funds going to Irish Cancer Society"

Voluntary workers are tidying up the Church Yard in preparation for the up-coming Cemetery Mass and blessing of graves. They have tidied the shrubs, sprayed the weeds and arranged to have the grass cut. Individual graves, however, are the responsibility of the individual families. Join in the momentum, get active and spruce up your family grave for the occasion.

Eucharistic Congress 2012
National Eucharistic Congress - Knock June 25th - 26th 2011
A short National Eucharistic Congress will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June25th and 26th, this year. People from every diocese will gather together in Knock on Saturday June 25th and there will be a liturgical celebration in each diocese the following day, Sunday June 26th, the feast of Corpus Christi. On a more local level, it is hoped that two (or more) representatives from each parish, will participate in the celebrations in Knock on the Saturday. They will bring a Eucharistic Congress Candle to Knock on behalf of each our parishes, and these candles will then be solemnly lit at the Sunday Masses in our own churches. There is also an invitation for one family from each parish to the Pro-Cathedral on Sunday June 26th for a celebration of Mass at which Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will formally light the Diocesan Eucharistic Candle.

International Eucharistic Congress 2012 Volunteers Needed

Eucharistic Congress Collection: Next Week
The June Collection for the International Eucharistic Collection has been postponed, and will be taken up at all Masses on the weekend of Sunday June 26th.

Cystic Fibrosis Collection
PLEASE GIVE A DONATION FOR LIFE. The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland is holding a church gate collection (Rathcoole and Saggart) on Saturday 25th June and Sunday 26th June 2011. Also, please look out for the bag packers in Dunnes Stores, Saggart on Saturday 25th June 2011. Ireland has the highest rate of Cystic Fibrosis in the world - 15 people have died from Cystic Fibrosis so far this year, 10 of whom were under the age of 25. However, the standard of care in the Republic of Ireland falls far below the European level. All monies raised go to improving facilities around the country - the buying of equipment for hospitals, help and information for Cystic Fibrosis patients and their families and towards research. Mass for Exam Students The Vigil Mass on Saturday June 4th at 6.30pm in Rathcoole Church will be specially dedicated to all students sitting exams at this time of year.We hope that after this Mass young people will leave with a sense of hope for the future, knowing that God is their friend, a friend who will ALWAYS be there for them, even when things seem to be going wrong, and that the Holy Spirit will inspire them, both during their study and the exams themselves.

First Holy Communion and Confirmation Congratulations Congratulations to the children of St.Mary’s NS Saggart and St. Finian’s NS Newcastle who celebrated First Holy Communion on Saturday May 28th. Congratulations also to the 6th Class boys and girls of St. Finian’s NS who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday May 24th in Newcastle. We hope you all had a very special day as you took these important steps on your faith journey. Congratulations also to your parents, for whom these days are also very significant.

Eucharistic Congress 2012 Preparation is well underway for the International Eucharistic Congress due to take place in Dublin from June 10th to 17th, next year. As part of the preparation, a short National Eucharistic Congress will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June25th and 26th, this year.

The first anniversary of the publication of the Pastoral Letter of Pope Benedict XVI to the Catholics of Ireland occurs on 19 March 2010. To mark this anniversary Irish bishops wish to bring the following three important initiatives to the attention of the faithful: the publication of their pastoral response Towards Healing and Renewal; the new Catholic counselling and support service for survivors of abuse; and, the progress of listening and consultation exercises which have been taking place.

To mark this first anniversary bishops have published the pastoral response Towards Healing and Renewal. This outlines different undertakings that the bishops are making on the journey emphasised by the survivors of abuse. These steps include: Prayer for the Survivors of Abuse, including a commitment on the part of bishops to dedicate each First Friday to prayer and fasting in reparation for abuse and the failure to address it adequately; a commitment to listening with sensitivity and care to the experiences of those who suffered abuse; spiritual support to survivors of abuse who wish to avail themselves of it, including the opportunity for spiritual direction; ongoing commitment to creating a safer future for children in the Church in accordance with Safeguarding Children; a review of Dioceses, Religious Congregations and Societies by the National Board for Safeguarding Children; and ongoing financial support for the work of safeguarding and care. Towards Healing and Renewal also includes ways in which parish communities can play their part in assisting the process of healing for survivors of abuse.
In February 2011 bishops, the Conference of Religious of Ireland and the Irish Missionary Union have launched a new Catholic counselling and support service. This counselling service, which continues the important work of Faoiseamh, supports survivors of abuse in a professional and caring environment by providing a wide range of services, including Helpline and face-to-face Counselling. Healing Meetings, Group Work, Practical Workshops and a Social Worker/Bridging service designed to link survivors of abuse to other services relevant to their needs, such as the health, local authority, educational and social welfare services.
Over the last year, and prompted by Pope Benedict’s Pastoral Letter, listening and consultation exercises have been taking place in dioceses. These are continuing and are an important step on the journey of healing and renewal for the Church in Ireland.

If you did, then the stamp you used is one that depicts the likeness of the saint located near the entrance to the chapel of St Patrick's College, Maynooth. Dominic McNamara, a member of staff, took the photo which was used as the design for this year's stamp from An Post. A card was also produced, which is shown here (with permission).

What would your 'Thought for the Day' be? Mine would be to try to conjure up in imagination those far-distant times, the times of the bringing of Christianity to these islands. God, he tells us in his 'Confession', picked him up like a pebble off the road and placed him high on the wall. St Patrick looks down on us all at Mass every Sunday, flanked by St Brigid and St Columcille. Thoughts of being Irish, then, of our forebears who lived out a life of faith for us, our forebears the glorious saints, and our forebears the good people all who have gone before us.

In the RDS in Dublin today Cardinal Seán Brady and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin launched two major initiatives as part of the preparations for the 50th International Congress which takes place in Ireland in 2012: a major volunteer drive and the Congress Bell.

The theme of next year's Congress is "The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and one another". The Eucharistic Congress is one of the largest liturgical events and opportunities for pilgrimage throughout the universal Catholic Church. It is hosted by a different country every four years.

The main events of the Congress next year will take place in the RDS, Dublin, beginning with the opening ceremony on 10 June 2012. Over the week 10 - 17 June a programme of liturgical and cultural events, workshops and daily celebration of the Eucharist will culminate in an open air Mass and closing ceremony in Croke Park.

Congress organisers have been developing partnerships with tourism representatives in Dublin as it is hoped the international visitors will give a significant boost to the city's tourism industry.

Organisers are also keen to encourage volunteers to take part not only in the Eucharistic Congress itself but also in the lead up to the main events. Volunteers are needed in a wide variety of roles including administration, hospitality, translation services and stewarding. Details are available in seven different languages on www.iec2012.ie

Next week, on Saint Patrick's Day, a pilgrimage of the Congress Bell will begin from St Mary's Pro Cathedral, Dublin, going to St Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh and it will visit all 26 dioceses of Ireland. The bell is a symbolic invite to Irish Catholics, and for Christians of other traditions, to join in the call to faith, prayer, reconciliation and mission that is at the heart of the Church's preparation for the Congress over the next year and a half.

The Secretary General for the Eucharistic Congress Fr Kevin Doran said at today's launch "Core to the mission of the Congress is the view that it is a pilgrim journey involving spiritual and pastoral preparation. Each diocese in Ireland has its own organising committee to promote a deepening of understanding for Catholics of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church, a richer celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy and an awareness of the social responsibility that comes with the communion and self-gift of Jesus which we celebrate."

• The Congress Bell has its origins in the Dominican Convent in Portstewart in Co Antrim and will be brought on foot from diocese to diocese by teams of volunteers. It is hoped that the Congress Bell will be a focal point for the prayer in parishes and at places of pilgrimage all over Ireland between now and June 2012.

• The first International Eucharistic Congress, held in France in 1881,gathered 300 people at the head of Eucharistic movements in European countries. During the following 125 years, the format of Congresses strongly evolved and they now attract some 12,000 to 15,000 participants for a full week of celebrations, adoration, catechesis, cultural events, fraternal gatherings, and commitments to aid the poor. Ireland last hosted the International Eucharistic Congress in 1932.

• Since 1881, the Pope had always been represented by a special Delegate at the celebration of Eucharistic Congresses. In 1964, Pope Paul VI took part in the last two days of the Congress held in Bombay, an initiative followed by his successor, John Paul II.

Why a Eucharistic Congress in Ireland in 2012? The Catholic Church in Ireland is undergoing a process of renewal. In Ireland, as in many Western societies, that renewal must spring from a new evangelization, a vibrant re-presentation of the essentials of the Christian message to men and women who, though baptized and who were perhaps at one time active participants in the life of the Church, have in various ways drifted away from full sharing in that life.

Evangelization and renewal in the Church take place at various levels. A Eucharistic Congress is a particular instrument of renewal in the Church. Eucharistic Congresses are in fact very common in the life of the Church. In Italy this year one of the central events of the programme of evangelization is a National Eucharistic Congress to be held in Ancona in September. National Eucharistic Congresses have been held in recent times in many other countries, including in the United States, Spain, Brazil and even in Cuba. An Irish National Eucharistic Congress is planned for this year.

The Eucharist is central to the Christian life. The Eucharist is the real presence in history of the self-giving love of Jesus on the Cross. The self-giving love of Jesus even unto death is the source of the new life brought by Christ with his death and resurrection and with the sending of the Spirit.

It is the Eucharist which shapes the Church. The descriptions we find in the Acts of the Apostles indicate the essential dimensions of the life of the Church. When the early Christians gathered “they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). The Church is a community of prayer, inspired by the word of God and by the Eucharist. The Church is a communion, a special form of fellowship and sharing which is shaped by the Eucharist.

The 50th International Eucharistic Congress is not a societal event. It is an ecclesial event, celebrated in faith. It is not an assembly about structures. Pope Benedict spoke of Eucharistic Congresses as a way of promoting evangelization which “is carried out at the school of the Church in prayer, on the basis of the Liturgy and in the Liturgy”.

The 50th International Eucharistic Congress is not backward-looking event, re-evoking celebrations of the past and of a different time. Neither is the Eucharistic Congress a sterile inward-looking discussion just about Church structures. A Eucharistic Congress is a missionary event. The Acts of the Apostles note that the fruit of the gathering and sharing of the early Christians was that “the Lord added to the numbers” and that they then enjoyed “the goodwill of all” (Acts 2:47,48).

The hope of the Eucharistic Congress is that through renewal in prayer and its liturgical life, the Church will be purified, cleansed and renewed so that its true mission in the world will be more evident.

In synthesis, the Lenten journey, in which we are invited to contemplate the Mystery of the Cross, is meant to reproduce within us "the pattern of his death" (Ph 3: 10), so as to effect a deepconversion in our lives; that we may be transformed by the action of the Holy Spirit, like St. Paul on the road to Damascus; that we may firmly orient our existence according to the will of God; that we may be freed of our egoism, overcoming the instinct to dominate others and opening us to the love of Christ. The Lenten period is a favorable time to recognize our weakness and to accept, through a sincere inventory of our life, the renewing Grace of the Sacrament of Penance, and walk resolutely towards Christ.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, through the personal encounter with our Redeemer and through fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the journey of conversion towards Easter leads us to rediscover our Baptism. This Lent, let us renew our acceptance of the Grace that God bestowed upon us at that moment, so that it may illuminate and guide all of our actions. What the Sacrament signifies and realizes, we are called to experience every day by following Christ in an ever more generous and authentic manner. In this our itinerary, let us entrust ourselves to the Virgin Mary, who generated the Word of God in faith and in the flesh, so that we may immerse ourselves - just as she did - in the death and resurrection of her Son Jesus, and possess eternal life.

The WDP Committee in Chile sees the theme question, "How Many Loaves Have You?", as an invitation to enter a process that draws us into the Bible, into the context of Chile, and into the real situations of our lives and communities. This year's Bible studies come from 1 Kings 17: 8-16 and Mark 6: 30-44.

The widow of Zarephath story in 1 Kings 17, when a woman's tiny amount of oil and flour do not run out even during a severe famine, has special meaning for Chile and its history scarred by times of extreme exploitation. In four stories told in the service, the women describe critical devastating times when people chose to resist evil by forming community. Feel encouraged to consider times in your country or community when evil was overcome by people acting together for the common good.

We are ready now to turn to the Gospel of Mark 6:30-44, where the crowds listening to Jesus are hungry. The disciples advise Jesus to “send them away … so that they may … buy something for themselves to eat.” Jesus responds by telling the disciples, “You give them something to eat.” It would seem to the disciples that Jesus does not fully understand the situation. Even if they had the day’s wages of 200 men, they could not buy enough bread for this crowd. Nonetheless, Jesus maintains his position that they give them something to eat. “How many loaves have you? Go and see.” The search uncovers five loaves of bread and two fish. This amount among so many people is as meager as the flour and oil available to the widow of Zarephath.

It is important for us to seek out a deeper level of understanding by reflecting on the mystery of the widow's oil and flour that did not run out and the mystery of the feeding of the five thousand. During this year's service, we are asked to form small groups and to answer the question: How many loaves have you? What are your gifts? What can you share?

There are moments where silence and listening are more important than words and what we say.

What can I say to you who are victims of sexual abuse by priests of the Archdiocese of Dublin or by religious? I would not be honest and sincere if I were to say that I know what you have suffered. I may try to understand, but that suffering is yours ...

Someone once reminded me of the difference between on the one hand apologising or saying sorry and on the other hand asking forgiveness. I can bump into someone on the street and say “Sorry”. It can be meaningful or just an empty formula. When I say sorry I am in charge. When I ask forgiveness however I am no longer in charge, I am in the hands of the others. Only you can forgive me; only God can forgive me.

I, as Archbishop of Dublin and as Diarmuid Martin, stand here in this silence and I ask forgiveness of God and I ask for the first steps of forgiveness from of all the survivors of abuse.

There is a time for silence. But there is also another silence: a silence which is a sign of not wanting to respond, a silence which is a failure of courage and truth.

There are men and women in this Cathedral today to whom we must express our immense gratitude for the fact that they did not remain silent. Despite the hurt it cost them they had the courage to speak out, to speak out, to speak out and to speak out again and again, courageously and with determination even in the face of unbelief and rejection.

The first step towards any form of healing is to allow the truth to come out. The truth will set us free, but not in a simplistic way. The truth hurts. The truth cleanses not with designer soap but with a fire that burns and hurts and lances.

Again the Church in this Archdiocese thanks you for your courage. I in my own name apologise for the insensitivity and even hurtful and nasty reactions that you may have encountered. I appeal to you to continue to speak out. There is still a long path to journey in honesty before we can truly merit forgiveness.

There is a third level of silence in our midst this afternoon. It is the silence of the cross ... We gather before the cross of Jesus which presides over us and judges us. It is the Cross of Jesus that judges whether our words and our hearts are sincere ...

The silence of Jesus on the cross is again interrupted by his prayer of abandonment: “My God why have you forsaken me?” It is the prayer that so many survivors must have made their own as they journeyed with the torment of hurt which for many years they could not share and which haunted them day after day, from their childhood and into adult life.

But Jesus faces that abandonment and finally hands himself over to the Father bringing his self-giving love to the utmost moment of giving his own life in love. That opened the door to newness of life. We gather under the sign of the cross which judges us but which ultimately liberates us.

On next Sunday 20th February at 3pm a Liturgy of Lament and Repentance for the sexual abuse of children by priests and religious will be held in St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, within the framework of the Apostolic Visitation of the Archdiocese of Dublin.
The liturgy will ask the forgiveness of God and of all survivors for the failure of those Church leaders and many others in the family of the Church to respond with love, integrity, honesty, understanding and compassion to the pain and distress of survivors.
During the liturgy which has been prepared principally by survivors, Cardinal Sean O’Malley and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will wash the feet of a group of people who have suffered in various ways through abuse.

A Film Everyone Should See

The film is called Des hommes et des dieux (Of Gods and Men), on at the Lighthouse cinema, Smithfield. It has been running for a few weeks and will run for next week at least, though when I was there last Sunday, there were lots of empty seats, a sign surely that it will end its run soon.

It is about the killing of seven Cistercian/Trappist monks of the monastery of Tibhirine, south of Algiers in Algeria, in March 1996. They were abducted one night by a band of militants whose exact identity has never been determined (whether Islamic militants or soldiers of the Algerian army). Two monks escaped the round-up as they were in another part of the monastery. The heads of the seven monks were later found but not their bodies.

Such an event, naturally, caused uproar especially in France and much has been written about it. You can get an idea on Google/Wikipedia.

It is a film that everyone should see. There is so much in it about a whole range of topics: monastic/missionary life, other religions and cultures, 'dying for the faith', commitment and the decision to stay to the end, the exploration of life's meaning and purpose and, throughout all, the beauty of the French language, religious language in particular.

I notice that the film carries a 15A certificate. I just cannot see how it needs such a cautionary advice-note. This prompted me to visit the site of the Irish censor at http://www.ifco.ie/. Such a cert indicates that the film is suitable for those aged 15 or over and also for those under 15 accompanied by an adult. I feel it is a film that would be of great interest to any young person of today, and far far above the quality of the religious films of my own day (e.g. The Ten Commandments, Exodus, even Ben Hur).

A film, then, highly recommended for people of all ages, young and old. I rang a 90+ year-old friend of mine suggesting we go and see it, but she had already seen it! Agreed, she had been a teacher of French.

Each person will take away their own lasting impressions. To crown it all, we have the comfort and facilities of the cinema itself: the seats and the wonderful acoustics that allow us to follow every word of, say, a community meeting round a table to discern whether they should go or stay, or every word of a beautiful Christmas hymn.

Unwanted Gifts Appeal

Staff in St. Mary’s Pro- Cathedral are again appealing to people to donate unwanted Christmas gifts for distribution to the homeless. The gifts will be given to Crosscare who will distribute them to people most in need throughout 2011 and use them as Christmas gifts for people who may never receive one, this time next year.
If the appeal is as successful as it has been in previous years, Crosscare will sell the surplus gifts in their “Gifts for Good” shop in Cathedral Street and use the monies raised in their homeless services around Dublin.
Unwanted gifts can be left at the crib in the Pro Cathedral up until January 6th.

Facing difficult times as a community

The Irish Bishops have said they are praying for a spirit of national solidarity and hope as well as a renewal of confidence in the country’s ability to work together for the good of all so as to address the adverse circumstances confronting the nation at this time.
“Faced with these challenges it would be easy to descend into a culture of negativity, defeatism and despair,” the bishops acknowledged.
However, they said that while important questions have to be asked about how this situation had arisen, “a preoccupation with blame and recrimination alone would be futile and distract from the urgent task of building a more just, sustainable and prosperous future”.

Citing the appeal of St Paul in his first letter to the Thessalonians, “Encourage one another and build one another up... For this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus,” the bishops said that as Christian leaders, they echoed this to the people of Ireland today.

“As we prepare for the coming of ‘God-with-us’, in the celebration of Christmas, we pray for a spirit of national solidarity and hope”, they said.

This is an interview carried out by myself with the parish priest of St Mary's, Chippenham, a town near Bath in Wiltshire. It appeared in the English 'Catholic Herald' weekly newspaper this week. Fr Millett is 81 and has been P.P. of St Mary's for over 25 years, having been 15 years in Bath before that. He taught me in primary school in the 50s (St John the Baptist primary school, Clontarf, Dublin). I had him for 5th and 6th class. He went for the priesthood in his late 30s and was ordained in 1971. The interview gives a good idea of what St Mary's parish is like, and we may compare with it our own parish of St Mary's.

I hope I have a reader out there, and any comment is welcome.

In the second week of November a delegation from the Congress Organising Committee, led by Archbishop Martin, participated in an international gathering in Rome, hosted by the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses.

Pope Benedict said “your Assembly has paid great attention to this event, which is also part of the modernisation programme of the Church in Ireland. The theme, recalls the centrality of the Eucharistic Mystery for the growth of the life of faith and every authentic process of Church renewal”.

Pope Benedict also remarked that this week’s meeting falls on the 50th anniversary of the Eucharistic Congress in Munich, Bavaria, which marked a turning point in understanding these ecclesial events, and which the Pope said “I had the pleasure of attending that assembly in person, as a young professor of theology”. In addition, he said the 2012 Congress in Ireland will have a jubilee character, as it will be the 50th Congress and it will also be 50 years since the opening of the Second Vatican Council.
The Eucharistic Congress will be hosted by the Archdiocese of Dublin on behalf of the whole Irish Church. The theme of the 2012 Congress is “The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and one another” and pastoral planning and preparations are well under way throughout Ireland.

2 It was the eagerness of Zacchaeus to see what kind of a man Jesus was that opened him up to conversion. When you consider moments of change in your life what were the interests or desires that prepared you for change?
3 The decision of Jesus to eat in the house of Zacchaeus broke the social norms of his day and scandalised those who saw him. When have you found table fellowship a useful way of breaking down artificial boundaries between people?

"A Fundraiser is being held in St. Marys GAA Hall, Saggart on Friday next the 15th of October to raise funds for Sophia Housing Cork Street, Sophia Housing which provides a home and support for many in Cork Street, visit www.sophia.ie for more insight in to their work.

Irish High Crosses: The Cross with the Cats

Dear Parishioners,

It's time to close the Competition to name the Irish High Cross with the cats on it. You may remember that there was an exhibition in the National Museum (Collins Barracks) over the summer (it may still be on!), featuring replicas of various Irish High Crosses. Above is a photo of the Cross in question, reproduced here by kind permission of The Irish Catholic and photographer Lucia Ribagarda.

The Cross is Muiredach's Cross, Monasterboice, Co. Louth. This dates from the 9/10th century. The person pointing out the cats here is Dr Peter Harbison, the well known scholar and archaeologist. On the panel above the cats, you can make out the Taking of Christ in the Garden. As I say, it made for a very nice trip for me early this summer.

The theme for the DAY FOR YOURSELF on October 9th is Living Life Gratefully. A sense of gratitude for life can do wonders to lift our spirits even when life seems full of problems. This day, which will be led by Bernadette Toal and John Byrne, will encourage participants to keep gratitude in their hearts at all times. The day runs from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm with the opportunity of staying on for Mass at 4.30. Cost €50 ((including lunch).
INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION
This is a two-hour introduction to the theory and practice of meditation for people who have thought they would like to start this practice but don’t quite know how to get started. In order to make the introduction available to as many people as possible we are running it on Sunday 10th afternoon (3.00-5.00pm), Tuesday 12th morning (11.00am-1.00pm) and Thursday 14th evening (7.30-9.30pm). It will be run by John Byrne and Bernadette Toal and there is no charge.

1 As often with the parables of Jesus, this one is intended to shock in order to make us think. Jesus is not praising the injustice of the servant, but his purposefulness in preparing for the future. In your experience what difference does it make when you are purposeful and energetic instead of lethargic?
2 It was his master’s call to account that galvanised the servant into action. What have been the experiences, or people, that have galvanised you into action when you had been somewhat half-hearted in your efforts?
3 ‘No servant can be the slave of two masters.’ When have you experienced the truth of this statement?

The fundamental mission of a Parish is to spread and deepen the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet parishes are also influenced by the cultural factors beyond their immediate control. As Irish society has been transformed, so too our Parishes have been undergoing changes. Among those changes is the decline in the number of Priests. We now reach another crossroads and require your participation in helping chart a way forward.

In order to meet the challenges of the future, the Parish of Saggart, Rathcoole and Brittas and the Parish of Newcastle have been invited to work more closely together. If managed successfully, these challenges can be turned into opportunities.

Of particular urgency is the availability of priests. Diocesan requirements state that a priest should only celebrate the Eucharist twice in one day. In effect, there will only be two full-time priests to serve the two parishes – Fr. Enda Cunningham and Fr. Aiden Kieran. Fr. Michael McGowan is retired and Fr. Michael Shortall holds a full-time position in Maynooth College.

As a result, the most direct and immediate requirement is to restructure the celebration of the sacraments, in particular the Sunday Eucharist.

This process will rely very much on your generosity but I appreciate that it may discommode some. I thank the Parish Council and the Parish Team for debating and proposing possibilities.

“Dear brothers and sisters,

This Sunday's Gospel passage continues the words of Jesus to the disciples on the value of the person in the eyes of God, and the uselessness of earthly preoccupations. It is not a praise of disconnection. Rather, hearing the reassuring call of Jesus, 'Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom' (Lk 12.32), our hearts open to a hope that illumines and animates concrete existence: we have the certainty that 'the Gospel is not only a communication of things that can be known, but a communication that produces deeds and changes lives. The dark door of time, of the future, is thrown open. Whoever has hope lives differently; he is given a new life' (Spe Salvi, 2). As we read in the section of the Letter to the Hebrews of today's liturgy, Abraham presented himself with a trusting heart in the hope God opened to him: the promise of a land and 'numerous descendants' and leaving 'without knowing where he was to go,' trusting only in God (Heb 11:8-12). And Jesus in today's Gospel -- across three parables -- is illustrated as awaiting the completion of the 'blessed hope,' his coming, in urging us toward an intense life, rich in good works: 'Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy' (Lk 12:33). It is an invitation to use things without selfishness, without thirsting for possession or dominion, but according to the logic of God, the logic of concern for the other, the logic of love: as Romano Guardini summarized it, 'in the form of a relationship: starting from God, in the view of God'....
Today’s Gospel reminds us that by God’s goodness much has been given to us, and much will be required of us. During these quiet days of summer let us thank the Lord for the many blessings we have received and draw ever closer to him in prayer, in fidelity to his commandment of love, and in communion with his Body, the Church!”

In the prayer Jesus gave us as a model, the focus is not on getting God to do what we want, but on trying to be open to what God wants: ‘Your kingdom come.’ That openness implies a trust that what God wants for us, is our good. When have you found that you benefitted when you were open to whatever happened and trusted that the Spirit was with you no matter what happened?
In the culture of the Middle East hospitality is a priority. It would be unimaginable not to help a friend. Just so, it is unimaginable that God will ignore our prayer. When you think of the reliability of God what are the images that you find helpful and that encourage you to persist in prayer?

Summer Outings

Two ideas here for outings which I enjoyed recently. They both give great insight into our history. There's nothing to replace actually visiting important places and seeing objects that speak for a past that is remote in one sense but in another, very real sense, is connected to each of us as Irish people today.

Get the Luas from Tallaght and get off at the Museum. To my shame I admit that I visited it for the first time last week. It's a wonderful set of buildings to begin with, laid out round a hugely impressive square, obviously where soldiers trooped up and down in ages past. The exhibition on at the moment is devoted to Irish High Crosses. About six of the Crosses from the 9th century on are arranged in life-sized form in the exhibition space. They are replicas that were made at the beginning of the 20th century. Seeing them all together makes for an impressive sight and you just have to wonder at the meaning of it all, of the crosses themselves, of the monasteries of the time (Clonmacnoise, Monasterboice etc.), of religion then, and religion today.

And talking of monasteries leads to the second idea for a summer outing. We're very nicely situated here in Saggart/Rathcoole (and even more so in Brittas) for getting into the Wicklow mountains. It takes a little over an hour to drive to Glendalough. My wife and I went there recently during the week when it was quiet enough and were amazed that parking (Lower Carpark) is FREE, and that it's only 3Euro into the Interpretative Centre. Again, one cannot but be struck at the wonder of it all, the medieval paved entrance, the round tower, St Kevin's Church etc. And then the High Cross, this time in the Centre, for protection.

So Ireland is there for our discovery over the coming months, the beaches, yes (of course, and may it be sunny!), the golf courses maybe for others, and then quieter places that remind us of our past.

1 Today’s Gospel brings us right to the heart of what a Christian life involves: love of God and of neighbour. Jesus tells us that having life both now and in the future is the fruit of living in a spirit of love. How have you experienced the power of love given and received to be a source of life and vitality?
2 With media today we are brought face to face with suffering, poverty and hunger so vast that it can engender a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. What the parable challenges us about is how we react when we come face to face with a person in need. We may sometimes try to avoid getting involved. Recall when you overcame this reaction and reached out to help. What did that do for you, and for the other person?

4 Districts Charity Walk
"The Organisers of the 4 Districts Charity Walk are pleased to announce the date for this years Event. It will take place on Saturday 7th August and all are welcome to participate. Blessing of the Graves
Cemetery Sunday will take place at 3.00pm on the 4th July. Mass in Saggart Church will be followed by the Blessing of the Graves (weather permitting).

Unfortunately, due to financial cut-backs, the Council still have not cleaned up the graveyard in time. It is far from ideal. Of those who will attend, we ask of your patience.

4 Districts Charity Walk

"The Organisers of the 4 Districts Charity Walk are pleased to announce the date for this years Event. It will take place on Saturday 7th August and all are welcome to participate. The format is the same as last year, with a few interesting updates. This year we will be joined by the FM104 RoadHog, The Rathcoole Perk Coffee Shop and Go Karting for the kids. All the kids stuff is free and Adults can by their Tickets from Ticketmaster by phone or Internet.

All the details are on our new website - www.4DistrictsCharityWalk.com. The tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster for security reasons and no cash will be accepted on the day.
This year we are aiming to smash our World Record, with 10,000 Walkers the Target!!!!! So book your tickets early and we look forward to seeing you there. If you can't make it on the day due to holidays, please buy a ticket to show your support, it is all for a worthy cause."

Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Luke 9:51-62
1 In the opening verse Jesus is portrayed as having a new sense of clarity about his life that enables him to set out on the road ‘resolutely’. Perhaps there have been such moments in your life, moments of insight and clarity about the road ahead. Recall such moments and what they were like for you.
2 As he walked the road Jesus found that not everyone supported the journey he was making. Some of his friends were angry and wanted to hit back, but Jesus restrained them. What has helped you to cope with opposition you have met in your life and continue your journey.
3 The response of Jesus to prospective followers seems harsh. He lets the first man know that discipleship is not a path to a comfortable nest. It is a way in which we never know what is going to be asked of us next. The disciple must be ready to move on. Unfortunately, due to financial cut-backs, the Council have been restricted in their capacity to tidy up the graveyards under their jurisdiction, including Saggart Cemetery. With the fine weather spell we are having, perhaps this may be a good opportunity for you and your family to tend to your family grave.

Young adults are invited to join over two thousand other young Christians from around the world who come to this ecumenical monastery in Burgundy, France every week during the summer to experience the prayer and fellowship of the community founded by Brother Roger. The Parish would like to help fund two young people go—contact one of the Parish Team if you are interested! Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will be taking part. Cost of return flight and coach transfers, meals and basic accommodation for the week is e440 (incl. taxes and insurance). Luke 9:18-24
1 Jesus asks the disciples how people understand who he is and then asks them ‘Who do you say I am?’ How would you answer that question? What title or description would you give to describe who Jesus is for you?
2 Jesus goes on to teach his followers that discipleship is not about fame and honour. It is about living gospel values and will involve suffering, but that suffering will be a prelude to new life. When have you found that living gospel values was indeed costly but that you were glad you had paid that price?

Parish Pilgrimage to Lourdes
The tickets for Pilgrims to Lourdes will be issued by the Travel Agent directly and will be sent by post to those travelling in the coming week. A meeting for all those travelling will take place in Rathcoole Church at 7.00 pm Monday 21sr to discuss details.

The Council inform us that their resources are stretched and may not have the graveyard fully tidied up in time. So with the stretch in the days and the warm weather we are enjoying, we would like to encourage as many as possible to take a little time to tidy up the graves of their loved ones.

The miracle is symbolic of the abundance of blessings coming to us from God through Jesus. How has your faith in Jesus been a source of nourishment to you? What blessings have you received through your faith? 3 When the disciples became aware of the problem they wanted to send the crowd away and Jesus told them ‘You give them something to eat’. They thought what they had was insufficient but Jesus used the little they had to feed the crowd. Bereavement Support Volunteer
The Bereavement Service at Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross is recruiting for bereavement support volunteers. The volunteers will provide bereavement support to adults attending the bereavement service. Good communication skills and an interest in working with bereaved people are essential requirements.

This year’s Diocesan Corpus Christi celebrations will be held in the grounds of Clonliffe College on June 3^rd at 7.30pm. You are very welcome to come along if you are interested, particularly recent First Communicants are welcome.

The evening will include representatives from many Diocesan agencies and organisations and lay groups. There will be music from the Diocesan Music group with the Dublin Brass ensemble. We need to be ready and ospen to receiving the truth if it is to have any impact. Perhaps you can recall some occasions when it was the ‘right’ time for you to learn a truth about life. Remember your experiences of growing in understanding and truth.

Permanent Diaconate - Last Call

Applications are currently being considered from men between 35 and 60 years of age, who wish to explore the possibility of a vocation to the Permanent Diaconate. Detailed information is available on ww.vocations.dublindiocese.ie .

Applicants must already be active in some form of ministry or service and must be recommended by their parish priest,or another priest of the diocese with whom they have been working closely.
